Job Title: Tooling Manager

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Tooling Manager to take full ownership of the tooling department in a high-precision CNC machine shop. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive tooling program, managing all aspects of tooling inventory, issuing tools to machinists, overseeing procurement and reordering, and implementing systems to improve efficiency and uptime across the shop.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tooling Program Development

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve a standardized tooling program across all machining centers.

  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineers and Programmers to standardize tooling packages for repeat jobs.

  • Create and maintain a digital tooling database and libraries (integrated with CAM software if applicable).

  • Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory of all cutting tools, holders, inserts, fixtures, and related supplies.

  • Develop and execute a reorder system to prevent stockouts and ensure just-in-time availability.

  • Track tooling usage, tool life, and optimize reorder points and inventory levels.

  • Tool Issuance & Maintenance

  • Issue tools to machinists per job requirements with job-specific kits or pull sheets.

  • Oversee tool presetting and ensure proper labeling, calibration, and storage.

  • Maintain proper documentation of tool changes, breakages, and replacements.

  • Vendor & Procurement Management

  • Manage relationships with tooling vendors, negotiate pricing, and oversee procurement.

  • Source and test new tools or suppliers to reduce cost and improve performance.

  • Monitor tool performance and adjust purchasing decisions based on usage data and feedback.

  • Department Leadership

  • Fully own the tooling department including cleanliness, organization, and process adherence.

  • Train and support machinists on proper tooling usage and handling.

  • Collaborate with Production and Engineering to solve tooling-related issues on the floor.

  • Develop and document best practices, work instructions, and continuous improvement plans.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in CNC machining or tool management, preferably in aerospace, defense, or high-precision environments.

  • Strong knowledge of tooling types, applications, and optimization strategies.

  • Experience with CAM software and tool libraries (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, etc.)

  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and digital inventory tracking (e.g., JobBOSS, .)

  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

  • Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with vending solutions or automated inventory systems (e.g., AutoCrib, CribMaster).

  • Understanding of tool presetting systems and toolholder balancing.

  • Prior experience in reducing tooling cost per part or optimizing tool life strategies.

  • Forklift or material handling certification (if managing toolroom equipment or raw material as well).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50 lbs.

  • Standing, walking, and operating equipment in a shop environment for extended periods.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
